NIDI Institute of Farm Management: Plans Finalized

17 January 2019

NIDI has finalized plans for the establishing of an Institute of Farm Management  in Kilinochchi, in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. The project is an essential part of NIDI’s efforts to modernize farm development and management practices – across agriculture, fisheries and animal husbandry. The establishment of the Institute is also predicated on the felt need to develop more professional capacities required to establish and manage farms in a holistic way – from planning, operations, processing and marketing.

The Institute, to be built within a 250-acre commercial farm in Kilonochchi, will have class room and hostel facilities for trainees as well as a state-of-the art research center. The Institute will also have guest rooms for visiting lecturers and trainers. Trainees who will take short term courses or longer-term Certificate and Diploma courses will have on-site training on the 250-acre farm, owned and operated by Coral Farm, part of the Coral Group. Coral Group has granted a 2-acre land parcel within its farm for the construction and operation of the Institute.

The Institute will also be a critical focal point for NIDI’s larger project of training 1000 young graduates in the North, over the next 5 years, who will either develop and operate their own ventures or act as advisors and managers in various enterprises.

IFM will position itself as a center of excellence in research, education, training and as an advocate of modern and innovative farm methods and practices intended to increase productivity, generate greater income for farms. Anyone interested in participating in this project or wish to contribute to the establishment and operation of this venture either through technical collaboration or donations is welcome to email
